1979年，雅也（速水重道饰）与母亲荣子（倍赏美津子饰）一起生活在福冈县的小仓。因为受不了丈夫、雅也父亲兆治（泉谷茂饰）的冷落和婆婆富美子的挑剔，一天，荣子带着雅也离家出走，搬到了荣子的娘家筑丰居住。来到陌生的环境，雅也对母亲更加地依赖，荣子也开始在妹妹经营的小餐馆和水果市场帮忙，以维持母子二人的生计。雅也总是借口肚子痛而不想去上学，为了让儿子摆脱孤单，荣子为雅也找来了两名小伙伴，耕平和前野。荣子经常请雅也的小伙伴们到家里吃饭，这让雅也感到非常有面子。一晃十年过去，到了1989年，雅也和母亲在筑丰一所废弃的医院里生活了很多年。而雅也也顺利升入了高中，即将迎来毕业。在母亲荣子的眼中，雅也仍然是个没有长大的孩子，而雅也却对母亲无微不至地关怀感到厌烦。雅也经常和耕平和前野溜到学校的屋顶上去看黄色杂志。表面上循规蹈矩的雅也，内心却十分反叛。然而，他的内心隐藏着一个神圣的理想，希望能够考入东京美术大学深造
