Stárnoucí gangster Max (Jean Gabin) uloupil s parťákem Ritonem (René Dary) velké množství zlata, aby se zajistili před svým odchodem na stáří. Informace se tak dostala až ke gangu Angela Fraisera (Lino Ventura), který se rozhodl Maxe o zlato připravit a vymyslet na to plán.
