秦天义用心照顾受伤的金五爷，并根据种种迹象，判断出之前的事情都是金五爷在磨练自己。金五爷笑着告诉秦天义，当年他和秦兆通险些结拜成异姓兄弟，只是后来因为秦兆通执意要搞汽车运输公司，两人意见不合，这才分道扬镳，但在金五爷心中，一直佩服和感恩秦兆通。通过交谈，秦天义得知金五爷是因为有兄弟加入了乱党，因而受到牵连，被关入了大牢，金五爷向秦天义大讲共产党的好处，令秦天义十分神往。之后的交谈中，秦天义说起自己商队货物里莫名被查出六箱汉阳造的火枪，而金五爷惊讶地表示，不久前他们驼帮经手运送的一批军火，恰好就少了六箱汉阳造火枪！麻来根和麻来叶故意闯入大牢，想和秦天义同生共死，最后果然被狱警关入牢内。
