在浅见火山熔岩中发现了第八使徒的幼体。由明日香来执行首次使徒捕获作战。二号机装备了耐热耐压的 D 型装备后潜入熔岩一千米以下成功地捕捉了使徒的幼体，但在上升过程中，幼体开始急速乳孵化。作战计划不得不由捕捉更改为歼灭。在熔岩中苦战的明日香受到真嗣提出有关“热胀冷缩”原理的问题的启发，利用冷却液成功地消灭了使徒。初号机在最后时刻及时抓住二号机。 【在测定使徒时画面上所写的 “ANALYSIS PATTERN．BLOOD TYPE．BLUE” 一文出自庵野监督所敬爱的冈本喜八监督的科幻电影《蓝色圣诞节》。EVA 的“更衣室”里居然还挂著巨大的“衣架”，机器设定真是到处都是恶趣味。副标题中的 MAGMA 即是熔岩，整个词译为“熔岩潜行者”，指的当然是潜入浅见火山熔岩内部的二号机。关于这个词的来源，是科幻小说 SUNDIVER。】
