德爷深入西伯利亚内陆，调查由碎石形成的神秘环状结构，当地传说是一只巨大「火鹰」的鸟巢。在一整片针叶林中，这个像是陨石坑或火山口的东西显得异常突兀，也让科学家百思不解。艾德深知寒冷天候的地方不是他的专长，所以他必须当地人助他一臂之力。艾德在一群半游牧鄂温克族人的协助下，突破零下冰雪覆盖的崎岖地形，驾着驯鹿雪橇让他接近神秘的目的地。寒风刺骨让艾德深受挫折，而当他发现他出现冻伤时，出现要考虑放弃这趟旅程的困难抉择。
