清朝末年，山东周村。主人公十五岁的陈六子父母早亡，讨饭为生。但天资聪明，胸怀大志。要饭之余，爱去书棚听说书。 腊八天冷，饭店伙计锁子叔见他没有要到饭，就将自己的半块饼给了他。并嘱咐天太冷，夜里不能睡着。这一夜陈六子为了御寒，在街上乱跑乱跳。早上，周村通和染坊周掌柜出来扫雪，救下陈六子，并认其做了义子。起名陈寿亭。 染坊染布的刘师傅人心术不正，陈寿亭故意讨好刘师傅，加上平时偷着学，终于学会了染布的手艺，辞退了刘师傅。 十年后，由于陈寿亭经营得法，通和成了最大的染坊，紧靠着通和染坊的大亨染坊掌柜想暗中贿赂寿亭，遭拒绝。其内弟就谋划勾结土匪，以示威慑，王掌柜无奈屈从。陈寿亭探望当年的恩人锁子叔归来的路上，被土匪劫持到荒野中关帝庙里。逼其提高布的价格，寿亭却坚决不从……
