十年后，九一八事变，东北三省难民乘船来到青岛烟台逃难。 难民船上下来一位美丽女生沈远宜，前来青岛找他的情人东北军一军长霍长鹤。沈小姐寻人不成，反丢行李，归家无计，心存绝望。 寿亭下班回家，见自己的汽车停在咖啡店门口，原来济南三元的赵东初来青岛，正与家驹在喝咖啡。 寿亭沿着海边往家走，山河破碎，心绪烦乱，不知下一步向何处发展。正想坐下来抽烟，却见沈小姐绝望自杀未遂，在海边哭泣。寿亭原是要饭的出身，善良助人是他很大的一个性格特征。于是过去劝解。时值十月，青岛天冷，沈小姐海中归来，浑身湿透，海风再吹，苦不堪言。寿亭将其安排在渤海大酒店住下，并嘱咐账房，好好侍候。
