齐向前从钳工基础学起，因为不得要领他把自己的手砸得血肉模糊，于德水却依然无动于衷，“犟驴”齐向前和同样暴脾气的于德水针尖对麦芒，谁都不肯退让。齐向前来到厂保健站，帮忙包扎的盛捷给齐向前出了一个主意：让他先去磕头拜师娘，交伙食费，吃在师傅家，喝在师傅家，培养感情，逼着于德水收他为徒，然而饭量巨大的齐向前一上桌就把饭菜吃个精光，闹得师娘是哭笑不得。大北厂刚刚建立，没有像样的厨师和场所招待苏联专家莫洛索夫，于是肖科长安排孔仕举和曹德和夫妇准备筵席，在家里招待老莫。深谙“小资生活”的两人赶忙出门采购，准备了一大桌子丰盛的饭菜。 深夜，独自一人在工厂里练习铲钢筋的齐向前终于成功了，他激动得在空旷的工厂里大喊。厂长何枫也帮忙说情，让于德水再考虑考虑收徒的事。工人们在厂门口搬运设备时，齐向前利用自己在战场上搬运枪炮的经验，轻松解决了问题。
