六十年代中期，全国各地的剧团兴起了排演现代戏的热潮。白若雪擅长传统戏，对现代戏本能地有些排斥。恰巧，从市艺校分配来了一批新学员，其中学员石敏成了白若雪青衣行当的有力竞争者，白若雪顿感压力。晋商出身的曹德和骨子里就是个生意精，她不知道从哪儿搞到一些外贸兔头非要丈夫孔仕举拿到市里去卖，孔仕举觉得自己是大企业的干部干这种投机倒把的事儿有失身份。角落里的建设偷听到了他们的争执死缠烂打一定要跟着孔仕举卖兔头，并拿出自己攒的钱入股，曹德和觉得建设孺子可教，便让孔仕举带上建设去历练。下班经过市场的白若雪发现建设逃学跟着孔仕举卖兔头气愤至极，建设自知闯了大祸不敢回家。齐向前觉得建设从小利益熏心都是被资产阶级出身的曹德和夫妇带坏的。姜氏逼着齐向前去找建设回来，建设爬上树不肯下来，齐向前上树去抓建设却不料父子俩双双摔到树下被送进医院。
